Josephine Charlie

Josephine Charlie nee Antone (1898-1983) was born in Capilano, North Vancouver . Her family recorded she was a member of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nation [death registration]. She married Capilano-born Dominic Charlie (1885-1972) in 1913. Mrs. Charlie worked in the fish canneries for many years. She was a steward for the United Fishermen’s and Allied Workers Union and active in the Native Brotherhood.

Description

Charlie discusses conditions in B.C. canneries from the 1920’s to the 1950’s; family and community life at Knight’s Inlet cannery; healthcare; the roles of First Nations women; the Northshore and Great Northern canneries in North Vancouver, 1930’s and 1940’s; preparation and processing of fish; race conflicts in the canneries; treatment of Japanese women after WWII in the canneries; childbirth; striking situations in the fishing industry; her husband’s work on a seiner; organization of First Nations workers into the Brotherhood which bargained for them; raising piece rates; safety of children during canning season; her activities as a steward in the United Fishermen’s Federal Union (UFFU); her reasons for arguing against strikes for the most part.
