Nancy Buker, Caroline Green, Amy Milner

Amy Milner nee Avery is the sister of Caroline Green (1900-1990). She was born in London, England, the child of a bricklayer. She emigrated to Canada during the Depression. Her husband, Henry Milner (1891-1972) worked as an apartment manager and in 1941, Amy began work at the British Ropes factory.

Description

Sisters Caroline and Amy describe their individual jobs working in wire rope making and being a machinist at 13-years-old in a British laundry; immigrating to Canada; threatening suicide to get a job at British Ropes in Vancouver in 1941; shift work making precision airplane parts at Boeing during WWII; nursing St. Paul’s hospital after WWII; housekeeping in an apartment; journeyman training at Boeing. Buker discusses her work in the Vancouver shipyards 1941-42 (tape three).
