To supplement and offer context to the selected video works this page includes a number of pre-recorded interviews by Jesse Cumming with individuals and collective members whose work is featured as part of the Video Communication online screenings. In their conversations the guests speak about the artistic and political inspirations for their work, as well as the context for the videos’ production and distribution.

Michael Goldberg

Bio

MICHAEL GOLDBERG was born in Montreal and has lived in Japan since the 1980s. A founding member of Video Inn (now VIVO), he developed the “International Video Exchange Directory” and was co-director of the 1973 Matrix Alternative Video Conference. He has published numerous articles about video art and activism, as well as books on video techniques in English, French, and Japanese. His documentaries include A Zen Life: D.T. Suzuki (2006).

Mihato Taura

Bio

MIHATO TAURA graduated from Seian Joshi Art College in Kyoto. In 1975 she produced the video Homeless Woman by the Graveyard (aka Graveyard and a Beggar). Her illustration work has been featured in the self-published picture book Mihatori, a national food network’s yearly calendar and Yotonkai magazine, for which she also contributed recipes. She has been the subject of a solo exhibition at Awajishima Gyokuseikan Museum.

Moira Simpson & Elizabeth Walker

Bios

MOIRA SIMPSON’s work as an award-winning freelance director, cinematographer and editor of documentaries spans more than 45 years and encompasses many National Film Board, independent and television docs, as well as dance and performance pieces. Mo is drawn to projects featuring women who are change-makers. She has taught filmmaking at Emily Carr, SFU and UBC and has given filmmaking workshops across Canada, the Arctic, as well as in Nairobi, Kenya.

 

Initially a film editor, ELIZABETH WALKER turned director/producer for her own projects accumulating many international awards. Included in Elizabeth’s writing and directing credits are episodes in television series broadcast on CTV, Life, Discovery, Vision, WTN, SCN and Knowledge. For Monro Communications, Elizabeth was Producer of The Law Project that was nominated for Best Interactive Production at HistoryMakers, NYC.
