Gay Games III Digitization Project

Celebration ’90 – Gay Games III
Sports, Culture and Politics

Thanks to a B.C. History Digitization Grant, VIVO’s latest digitization project is in progress. We have begun work on Mary Ann McEwen’s documentation of Vancouver’s Celebration ’90, the first Gay Games to be held in Canada.

The collection is comprised of 144 Beta-SP recordings of the Games, its cultural festival, and the politics that impacted the event. We have received funding to digitize the first 44 videos and are raising funds to complete the collection. The bulk of this raw footage will be made freely and publicly available on our online archive  (home of the Gayblevision Legacy Project).

The videos include coverage of the sport events, interviews with athletes, artists, and organizers, and documentation of the cultural festival – on and back stage.

Involved in organizing or participating in the Gay Games?

We’d love to hear from from you. If you have ephemera, photos, or video you’d like us to consider supplementing the collection with, please contact the Crista Dahl Media Library & Archive .
