VIVO Welcomes Julia Aoki as Interim General Manager

VIVO Media Arts Centre announces the Appointment of Julia Aoki to the position of Interim General Manager effective July 2016

The  Board of Directors, Advisory Council, Management, and Staff, are pleased to announce the appointment of Julia Aoki as VIVO’s Interim General Manager. Julia comes to the position from the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, where she was Operations Coordinator.

Julia has long been involved in the Vancouver art community as a cultural manager, writer, researcher, and organizer. She is a PhD Candidate in Simon Fraser University’s School of Communication, with a research focus on cultural policy and local arts organizations. Julia served as Interim General Manager and Programming Director of the Powell Street Festival, was a Board Director at Access Gallery and worked for PAARC members to execute an analysis of the relationships between ARCs and provincial funding. Her writing on marginal histories can be found in TOPIA, Space and Culture and a forthcoming collection published by Lexington Books. In the cultural studies tradition, her work makes space for those cultural expressions and community formations that go under-investigated and underserved by commercial and political mechanisms and practices.

We are thrilled to welcome Julia Aoki and we look forward to the expertise and knowledge she will bring to VIVO in this exciting time of growth for the organization.

Julia assumed the position on July 25 2016. We would like to thank our outgoing General Manager Emma Hendrix for his 13 years of service to the organization. Emma has left a legacy of successful projects — including the centre’s relocation and ongoing renovations — that will continue to positively impact the organization. We wish Emma all the best with his future artistic and professional ventures.
