Synopsis:
The dance depicted in this performance expresses the subconscious repression of emotion by a white painted Butoh dancer. During WWII people of Japanese ancestry living in B.C. were forced to leave the coast. Through a series of surrealistic scenes these events are portrayed. This tape is a document of a multi-media performance which utilizes slides and traditional Japanese drumming.

Artist Biography
Jay Hirabayashi, who was born in the United States. In 1978, he joined the Paula Ross Dance Company. Later, he was a member of Mountain Dance Theatre and the Karen Jamieson Dance Company. In 1982, he became a co-founder of the Vancouver-based creative collective EDAM (Experimental Dance and Music) with Peter Bingham, Barbara Bourget, Lola MacLaughlin, Jennifer Mascall, Peter Ryan and musician Ahmed Hassan. He left EDAM four years later when he and his wife, Bourget, established their own company, Kokoro Dance.
