Description: The media plays a powerful role in all lives. It influences behaviour and how people think about themselves and others, often without much awareness. This process is particularly significant for women who have little input into the image-making process, yet are expected to emulate certain images such as the wholesome girl, the seductress, and super mom. Women’s bodies, dress, personality and actions will be judged according to the values shaped and conveyed through the media. This videotape looks at the presentation of women in TV, movies, advertising, music, fashion and the visual arts, decoding the images and examining the connections between them and women’s lives. The problems created by these images are discussed along with suggestions for improving the portrayal of women in the media and therefore in the quality of their lives. Description:This videotape examines the imagery and message of pornography and its connection to violence against women, stating that in fact we don’t have to accept this propaganda. The opening is a fast-paced montage of sexist visual and audio messages which confront us daily from popular fashion magazines, billboards, newspapers, record albums and radio programming.

Four women discuss pornography, what it is, how it has affected and continues to affect them and other women. They draw connections between the messages of pornography and increasing rates of violence against women. [Description from Women In Focus 1984 Video & Film Catalogue]
