VIVO Media Arts is currently looking for volunteers interested in supporting our Events, Tech and Communications departments.
Volunteers play an important role in supporting VIVO, a non-profit organization that provides equitable opportunities for media artists, preserves important media art histories, and disseminates experimental media art internationally. We couldn't do it without you!
Current Volunteer Positions:
- Events, Bartending/ Concession: This role is for regular volunteers, 19 yrs or older, with a Serving It Right License. VIVO may be able to pay for a license for regular volunteers on a case by case basis. This position is usually quite social, engaging with a variety of people in the arts community. Bartending/ Concession volunteers work in collaboration with at least one VIVO staff member, and sometimes a second volunteer.
- Events, Door/ Ticketing: In this role volunteers will sit or stand (as preferred) at a table to check guest tickets and sell tickets as needed. This role will be either solo or working in collaboration with another volunteer or VIVO staff member. This position is usually quite social, engaging with a variety of people in the arts community.
- Events Assistant: In this role, volunteers will assist with a variety of jobs depending on the event, including hospitality, setup, cleanup and guest assistance. Some tasks may include setting up chairs, setting up catering tables, bussing and washing dishes, ushering, and passing around microphones for artist talks. This position supports hospitality, accessibility and guest well-being at VIVO for art events such as artist talks, workshops and performances. In this role you will work with VIVO staff and volunteers, as well as independently.
- Events, Tech Assistant: Volunteers will help assist our Technical Services Manager with sound, lighting or projection as needed at events. This will often include running cables, hooking up microphones, helping in change overs between performances, and/or assisting with passing around microphones during artist talks. This job requires a basic knowledge of sound equipment including sound cables. In this role you will work with VIVO's Technical Manager as the main technician and supervisor, as well as with artists for performances.
- Exhibitions, Tech set up: In this role you will help set up technical equipment, such as speakers, projectors and screens, for events. Some knowledge of audio-visual equipment is a bonus but not required. In this role you will work directly with the Technical Services Manager and possibly another volunteer or VIVO staff member. This job may require medium-heavy lifting.
- Exhibitions, Preparator: Helping to clean and paint walls, mount artworks and screens on the wall. This role is behind the scenes and you will work either independently, with another volunteer, with VIVO staff members and/or with artists installing their exhibition. This role is a great way to see what goes into creating an exhibition, while supporting VIVO to provide exhibition space and support to artists.
- Technical Inventory/ Organization: This is a quiet, behind-the-scenes role where you will be trained and supervised by the Technical Services Manager to inventory and organize the tech equipment. This is a great position for people who are comfortable working independently, and enjoy learning about old and new audiovisual equipment. This job will sometimes be in collaboration with another volunteer, and supports VIVO to provide affordable rentals and production tools to Media Artists.
As an added bonus, volunteers earn 20 video bucks per hour, an in-house currency that can be applied to memberships, event tickets, workshops, equipment and space rentals!
New volunteers are encouraged to come to our next volunteer information/ orientation session on Thursday September 25, 2025 at 7-8 pm. To join the volunteer information and orientation session, or for other questions, please contact: info@vivomediaarts.com
