VIVO is located in the homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples in a warehouse space at 2625 Kaslo Street south of East Broadway at the end of E 10th. Transit line 9 stops at Kaslo Street on Broadway. From the bus stop, the path is paved, curbless, and on a slight decline. The closest skytrain station is Renfrew Station, which is three blocks south-east of VIVO and has an elevator. From there, the path is paved, curbless, and on a slight incline. There is parking available at VIVO, including wheelchair access parking. There is a bike rack at the entrance. The front entrance leads indoors to a set of 7 stairs to the lobby.
A wheelchair ramp is located at the west side of the main entrance. The ramp has two runs: the first run is 20 feet long, and the second run is 26 feet. The ramp is 60 inches wide. The slope is 1:12. The ramp itself is concrete and has handrails on both sides. There is an outward swinging door (34 inch width) at the top of the ramp leading to a vestibule. A second outward swinging door (33 inch width) opens into the exhibition space. Buzzers and intercoms are located at both doors to notify staff during regular office hours or events to unlock the doors. Once unlocked, visitors can use automatic operators to open the doors.
There are two all-gender washrooms. One has a stall and is not wheelchair accessible. The other is a single room with a urinal and is wheelchair accessible: the door is 33 inches wide and inward swinging, without automation. The toilet has 11 inch clearance on the left side and a handrail.
To reach the bathrooms from the studio, exit through the double doors and proceed straight through the lobby and down the hall . Turn left, and the two bathrooms will be on your right side. The closest one has a stall and is not wheelchair accessible. The far bathroom is accessible.
Bonnie Jones is a Korean-American writer, improvising musician, and performer working primarily with electronic music and text. Bonnie creates improvised and composed text-sound performances that explore the fluidity and function of electronic noise (field recordings, circuit bending) and text (poetry, found, spoken, visual).
Andrea Neumann. Born 1968 in Freiburg, Studied classical piano at the Hochschule der Künste, Berlin. Has been active primarily as musician and composer in the fields of new music and experimental music since 1994. She has been significantly involved in the formation and development of the “echtzeitmusik” scene in Berlin, which borders on fields as varied as noise, electronica, contemporary composed music, performance, and sound art.
Total Life is the solo project of Kevin Doria, founding member of the band Growing.Doria has participated in a number of collaborations with David Bryant (GY!BE), Jonathan Parant (Fly Pan Am), as well as filmmaker, Karl Lemieux. As Total Life, Doria has released several records with Animal Disguise Records, Brownsounds, Debacle Records, and, most recently, Important Records. He has also performed all over the U.S. and Europe.
Jesse Zubot of Britannia beach, B.C., is a founding member of the acoustic-roots ensemble Zubot & Dawson. Their last recording was produced by Lee Townsend (Bill Frisell, John Scofield) and released on True North Records in Canada. Zubot is also a member of The Great Uncles of the Revolution which includes well-known Toronto bassist Andrew Downing and jazz trumpeter Kevin Turcotte. Both of these recording acts are Juno Award winners.Jesse is heavily involved in the world of creative & improvised music and has performed and recorded with the likes of François Houle, Eugene Chadbourne, Evan Parker, Secret Mommy, Mats Gustafsson, Dave Douglas, Peggy Lee, Matthew Bourne, Orkestra Rova, Dylan van der Schyff, Tony Wilson, Fred Frith, Eyvind Kang, Dylan van der Schyff, Nels Cline and many more.
Josh Zubot is a musician who spent his younger years honing his skills in the West. During this time, Josh toured internationally with a violin group called Barrage. Soon after, Josh delved into the world of improv and electronic music playing in numerous projects in Calgary, Alberta.Josh’s musical interests reside somewhere in the middle of jazz, free jazz, avant garde, contemporary classical, folk, improvisational, rock and electronic. Mainly, Josh is a performer/composer fusing many means of styles through the studies of electronics and the violin.Along the way, Josh has played with numerous different groups and individuals. Some collaborations were with Chad VanGaalen, Lori Freedman, Philippe Lauzier, members of Bell Orchestre, Pierre-Yves Martel, Michael Blake, Bernard Falaise, Rainer Wiens, Michel F Coté, Sam Shalabi and many more.
Cellist, improviser, composer Peggy Lee makes her home in Vancouver, B.C. where she is part of a rich creative music community. She records and performs with longtime musical associates including Tony Wilson, Ron Samworth, Dylan van der Schyff, Torsten Muller, Veda Hille, Lisa Miller, John Korsrud, Wayne Horvitz and Robin Holcomb. Peggy also leads or co-leads a number of musical projects: The Peggy Lee Band, Film in Music, Waxwing (with Tony Wilson and Jon Bentley) and Beautiful Tool (with Mary Margaret O’Hara). Peggy will be playing solo for this evening of performance.
CLEMENT | OLSEN | RUHLMAN each have a common background in improvisational music and field recording. As a trio they ‘apply assorted electroacoustic techniques to various instruments and objects to produce deeply textured music that bristles with activity and shifts through different colour fields that bursts alive through little events’. The trio have an upcoming release, alongside UK improviser Daniel Jones, on the Vancouver based caduc. label.
Alex has been involved with VIVO for several years, in many capacities, including video restoration, installation, distribution, and various programming endeavours. He also programs experimental radio for Soundscapes on CFRO. He has a degree in film studies and comparative literature from the University of Alberta.
